This was very interesting until the very last bit. "That's the information that you're going to give Google". What? How do you give information to Google? Doesn't say.

Thanks so much for pointing this out. Embarrassing on my part, and my deepest apologies. For others that have noticed this as well, below are the instructions on how to submit the .xml file to Google.
Thank you, that does make more sense of it. And your prompt response is excellent! However, the Google page referred to in the link first requires that I verify that I own the site, by uploading some html. Again I am stumped and don't want to do anything that will upset my site!

Google provides various options to verify that you own the domain - please take a look at:-
as a site admin the easiest option is to use the meta tags method - we recommend doing this in the Settings area > General > Page Titles and Meta Tags - though it can be added as a meta tag under the summary tab > Advanced Options >Tasks > Edit the Page Title and Meta Tags

Patrick,
Not sure if this will help or not, but you will get a google verification code that looks like this: <meta name="google-site-verification" content="z5mJLjVGtEe5qzCefW1pamxI7H46u19n4XnxEzgl1AU" />
You will use google-site-verification as the (Name) and
z5mJLjVGtEe5qzCefW1pamxI7H46u19n4XnxEzgl1AU as the (Content)
